my mom has done hair for 30 years. Braids and weaves and other styles where there is a lot of loose hair around after. She has also been a barber for 15 years. she also smokes About 3 or 4 years ago she started coughing uncontrollably and sometimes throws up. Her doctor thought is was a throat infection and gave her antibiotics and they didnt work. Then he thought it was post nasal drip and gave her a prescirp for that but that didnt work either. The coughing gets worse when she is aggravated, upset, or at night when sleeping. she sometimes throws up from coughing or pees a little from the force of the coughing. I think its hair stuck in her throat but no one knows? any help advice?

She should have a chest and lung x-ray....you never know, a cough can be a sign of cancer.

Your mom works around a bunch of chemicals and her lungs may be a little burnt. Maybe your mom needs to go to a specialist and get to the bottem of her problem.

She needs to see her Dr again or consider seeing another Dr to get a second opinion. Your mom smokes so that is why she is coughing, but the cough could mean something is seriously wrong in her body. She needs a Dr asap.

Sounds exactly like allergies...

That's how I get when I'm around cats.. and even if you remove the cat, I will have an allergy fit for 6 weeks after wards,, I coughed so hard my ribs hurt, my eyes watered, swell up, couldn't sleep at night, I had to sit up in a lazy-boy chair for 3 weeks straight. and yes.. the throwing up and accidental peeing from the strained muscles.. all of that.. It took once a whole 3 months to get it out of my system.. I had to change my carpet ... .. I feel so sorry for her.. also I didn't have this while a child.. I asked my doctor and he said, sometimes these allergies appear late in life even if you were around the allergen early as a child.. weird huh?...

maybe your mom is allergic to hair or some chemical there.. She needs to be tested...

it can be a sign of cancer. a x-ray would b e good however theres no way the hair could be affecting her in this way. your mom may have a problem in her lungs or throt thats cozing her to cough like this. because its getting in the way her body coughs by trying to get it out.

tell her to get a different doctor. he doesent know what hes doing other wise he would of already known whats wrong.

I doubt it is the hair. I am not a doctor but I am a former smoker. I developed a bad cough and could not get rid of it. I went to many doctors and was treated for bronchitis asthma and whatever else. I had x rays to see if I had lung cancer. I quit smoking and the cough went away after about 6 months to as year. Get your mom to QUIT SMOKING. IT IS THE ONLY THING THAT WILL HELP. She has probably developed chronic bronchitis which is caused from smoking. Seriously it is the smoking that is causing her cough nothing else.

My Mom has had a cough for like 15 years. She has had every test test that she could have and nothing. They have found nothing. Tried every antibiotic, inhalers, vitamins etc to no avail. But I would have your Mom go back to a specialist and see. I just wish they could find out what is up with my Mom as she is so frustrated!

I don't know, but I would think the doctor should do X-Rays. She smoked and that is a classic symptom of those who smoke. Emphysema, and TB causes coughing. I don't know if the fumes from the chemicals from doing hair cause harmful lung disease. Urinating from coughing is just a normal event for women who have had children or are in menopause. We don't have the strong muscles anymore the older we get! It gets worse, I wear urinary light pads to help this situation and take hormone medication. I know it seems like I sometimes have something caught in my throat when I have allergies and she might have that sensation too, that is why they doctor might have given her the prescription. However, when she is smoking, she is aggravating the throat, and that triggers the 'gag' reflex which starts the coughing. Coughing is your body's way of saving itself from anything caught in the throat, but coughing aggravates the lining in the throat which will bleed as a result. What has to be determined is whether the blood is coming from the lungs or the surface of the throat. Blood from the lungs is not a good sign. Get her to stop smoking!!! My neighbor also had some heart trouble and she coughed all the time and finally the Doctor found that she had heart problems. My mother coughed when she had gal bladder attacks.

Sounds like my mom's cough, which her Dr told her is chronic bronchitis caused from smoking. The only way to make it stop is to stop smoking.

As for the vomiting, I complained about the same thing to my Dr yesterday. Although my cough is just a normal one associated with a nasty cold. She said vomiting is a perfectly normal, though unpleasant reaction to hard coughing.
