lol i think this question is hilarious. i already know the answer to this question im just curious what the rest of the world thinks (you would be surprised at some responses)..i think that unless its braids id never get hair extensions and id never glue it in!! NOTE: I KNOW THAT MANY MANY OTHER RACES DO THIS AS WELL BUT ITS MOST PROMINENT AMONG AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN. I know.... as a black girl i feel disgusted with the girls who are embarsses to show their beautiful natural hair or permed doesnt matter. As black girls i try to tell them that getting fake hair is dumb and just because the image is long flowing hair you make a statement with your thick hair and get it curly or flipped. I hate it when i see a black girl flipping their fake braids get real hair!!!

Quite frankly, African-American women do some cool s*** with their hair. They seem to be able to get away with it much more than a white woman can.

I think braiding, etc. takes so long that the extensions are the way to go. Actresses are also into hair extensions like Jessica Simpson who told Jay Leno that some days she prefers her shorter hair. Most models wear extensions too. I met a girl at a party with gorgeous long hair and she told me it was extensions to make it full.

I thought it was that some wanted long or straight hair and it looks nice. I know you said you didn't want to know about differences in hair types but I can't leave that out. I'm white with curly hair and I know curly hair breaks a lot easier in general, especially when you straighten it. If you want long hair, sometimes it's easier to use extensions.

I think so many blacks do so much damage to their hair with heat and styling products that it just stops growing. A lot of people are not satisfied with their hair but look at what we see on tv. Everyone has long pretty hair flowing down their blacks.No one is 100% satisfied with themselves so what is the difference in having weave in your hair and wearing fake nails?

I think that it is popular right now and our idea of beauty is constantly changing.

So right now it is seen as desireable to have long hair because that is one of the current perceptions of beauty.

What's the difference of that compared to wearing hats, bows or wigs or getting your hair done in rows on vacation? You have everyday hair and it's easy to take care of. But sometimes you just want something more spectacular and extensions are a novel way of doing that. It's a fashion trend, that's all.

(I'm not offended by the question).I think that many African American women do It because they want their hair to look manageable and not nappy.The style these days are long,soft,beautiful,manageable hair and some of their hair does not meet those standards.I admit,I have been guilty of using hair extensions.lol.

Why don't you start accepting yourself before you start to question other people's choices. We wear our hair in many different styles. I would rather have my hair then a Caucasians. I've had naturally long (mid back) hair, short relaxed hair, and even braids. It's called style change. I've never wanted to be white, wear blue contacts or bleach my skin.

It's sad that there are so many young women of color that are embarrassed by their beauty. When I was little, a girlfriend of mine wanted to be White so bad. I couldn't understand. My mother (who's dead now) was so strong, preserved, educated and beautiful. She had thick, black hair and wore it at different lengths.

Please, starting with yourself, stop looking at society and listening to what the WHITE people tell you and start loving yourself. Hair is hair, but in your case, it represents the hatred of ones self.

African American girls do so much to their hair because it's the most unattractive naturally. None of us have perfect hair. We all have to do a little work on on our hair. They have to do more than everyone else though.

I'd have to say that this question has attracted some of the most hypocritical answers I have ever seen on Y!A. Straightening hair is a relatively new thing in "black" culture, but weaving has been here for CENTURIES. Anyway, some black women wear weaves to fit into the media's perceptions of beauty. (i.e. the long, fine, flowing hair). Most African Americans don't pocess fine hair, it is rather kinky or curly. Some wear weaves for convenience. Some just wear it because they want to. Now I have a question for you. Why do YOU HATE YOUR HAIR?

I think extensions are freakin cool...i get extensions at least 5 times a year or more...and i just get them done for fun because i already have alot of hair and very long 2...

but i prefer to get them sowed in than glued...

And its better than dyeing your because it can get really damaged at times...

I never understood that myself. I tried getting braids once and my head was so irritated that I took them out within a week. I have long naturally curly hair and my mom has normal black hair she has to get perms and everything she has only had braids as well. And someone said something about straightening hair is a relatively new thing no it's not it's been around just as long as weaves. My mom and aunts were straightening their hair in the 50's

Truth be told it does make some women look better. ITs hard for alot of black women to grow their hair or they relax it too much and damage it to the point where they look like buckweeta. I think nothings wrong with weaves as long as it doesnt look tacky. If I wasnt fortunate to have this versatile hair, Id get a weave.
