I have owned and shown arabian horses my whole life, but this year i bought a Thoroughbred to show. You dont ever cut or anything an arabians mane so... I have no idea how to do hunter braids in my mares hair. I kinda got the idea of pulling it, but if any one can give any tips that would be great!

Any good websites, or info plz!

can i braid her mane like an arabian and get away with it in a show, and in showmanship classes?

At a hunter show, an arabian type running braid won't fly and if you pulled your TB's mane, it will be too short. You have a few options: these are the quickest and easiest; you can do tiny braids with yarn, plaits with thread and a needle or little round braids (balls) with an elastic. Wash and pull your horse's mane and after combing it out (works best when wet) braid it in to equal size braids about as wide as your pinkie finger. Wrap the end of the braid up in the rubber band and then pull the end through the top of the braid through the bottom, then wrap it into a ball and secure with an elastic. These will only hold for one day. You can divide your horse's mane in to small equally spaced pony tails, tie a piece of yarn into the pony tail that compliments your horse's mane (navy, black or brown) then braid the yarn into it to give it body. Loop the end of the braid through the top of the braid through the bottom and tuck the tail in through the top, secure the loop with an elastic. You can leave it in a large loop or loop it through once again for a small braid and secure with a rubber band, these have held for me for some 3 day shows. The hardest but best looking and longest lasting are plaits sewn in with thread and a needle. You can add yarn to the braid if you want, thin manes look better with it, but thick ones do not need it. Once the mane is braided in even individual braids, wrap the end of the braid up in the elastic. Stitch the end under the top of the braid and twist the braid tightly, then secure the bottom to the top with thread, it will hold nicely. If your horses made is thin and short you can make tiny braids with no yarn and fold them up and stitch them in place. Just play with your horse's mane and see what looks best, look online and in magazines at pictures so you know what it should look like if you need help, trial and error works best here. Good Luck.

I'll braid your mane........

well pulling it takes a hell of a long time, so i would definately plait your thoroughbred's mane. Or you do both, pull then plait it...

tease the hair then run a comb through it. then braid the mane and you can either use the thread and needle way or the elastic way. Thread and needle is longer, but more pro.

I don't braid my Geldings mane, but I know how. It's pretty easy theres a few ways you can do it. Or you could band it, thats more of a western thing, but I do that for HUS, and it works better for me.

Anwyways what you do is:

Leave it long, it's easier to braid! You take the first par of the mane and tug it to the side and take do the same with two other medium sized chunks of hair. braid them togather pulling to the side, do the same all the way down the neck. Then take rubber bands and band the ends of the braids togather.

Or you could do this:

Braid small strands of hair, after pulling. Then swirl the small braid up into the horses neck on the top part. Then put a rubber band on it like a little bun. This is harder to do. But most of the time this is what you do for HUS.

Good luck.

Here are some tips to help you braid your horses mane correctly!

Ideally the hair should be all the same length, about 5" is about right. Then section the mane off into an uneven number of sections. Depending on how long your horses neck is depends on how many you need. If your horse has a short neck then more braids will make it appear longer, likewise, if its an over long neck, fewer braids make it look shorter. Traditionally it used to be about 7 or 9 though I always prefered 11 to be truthful.

If you lightly spray each section with a fixing spray, perhaps a spray gel or mouse intended for human hair, then its easier to manage.

If you then braid the section in a 3 strand braid. Another tip here is if your horse has a thick neck then try to set the braid so its down on the side of the crest or if your horse has a thin neck, set it on top of the neck.

When you have braided to the ends of the hair, fold the end underneath the braid. Then, taking the end of the loop you created, fold that under neath too. You should now have a bobble of braided hair. You can either fasten this off with an elastic band, the same colour as your horses mane, or stitch it. Use a blunt darning needle and thick thread thats again, the same colour.

When you have done the mane from the neck, do a singular braid with the forelock and fasten it in the same way.

I hope this helps! Good luck :)

P.S A plait is an english term for a braid ;)

for a hunter you want to braid their hair on their *right* side. You want small, neat and tight braids and tie it with yarn the color of the horse. Here is a website that helps teach how to braid. Good luck! http://www.luckybraids.com/braiding.htm

If by hunter you mean gold or red arabian south of

early sudan no, don't do arabian hair braids. The pulled

braid is almost the same though for european, american,

south american, chinese, and olympians the braid is a small

weave that requires cuts, basically a patterned thinning.

You need to study this in a book. I cannot describe it so

for now use a regular salad tossing fork, until you check some equipment with someone that does a show style you like. Don't be shy at equestrian, the idea is to treat the horse

professionally, people are happy to teach you. Ok two good

tips to get the pain out of pull, one ride or exercise really

early like 4 to 5 am and maybe a dawn ride. Koolaid with

crushed small chip ice helps the mood a lot. A pie bucket

of bakery old pie small on pulling days because it helps the

mane glisten and they see it. A hair treat is good too.

There are lots of sections on this site, I like french.
